Was that touch really necessary, guys? Emphasis mine.
Dear Mr. Jackson,
The information we have on file for you tells us that at one time
you intended to complete a University of Chicago application.
Usually students who are attracted to this college are people
whose applications prove to be fun to read, and we feel sorry
we never got to read yours. Now we are prepared to close your file and wish you well as you
choose to attend some other good place. If you indeed made a
decision to forego applying to Chicago this time around, think
of us when you apply to graduate school. If you are receiving this message despite having submitted an
application via the mail (or thought you submitted your application
online) by the January 3rd deadline, please let us know by February
6th, with some way of confirming that the application was indeed sent. Please reply directly to this email.
Again, accept our best wishes for your future plans.

The rest of the message was fine, obviously. Little bit cheeky there, I don’t see why I should be made to feel so bad that I’m not applying to the University of Chicago. My good friend Meredith Spoto ‘07 will be going there next year, though, so I guess I can’t stay too angry. I have lots of fondness for the place, they didn’t need to twist a dagger in my heart about my not applying, though.
This message reminds me of another question I always have: I wish there were a better way to notify schools of a noninterest. Unless it is no expense or trouble to them to maintain files like this, I expect they would appreciate it too… maybe some sort of ‘common app kill switch’ which would inform them all that you no longer were considering their school. Was there such a general purpose notification to solve Early Decision confusions? I guess this is a pipe-dream for the future of 100% digital admissions. Oh well…
Zuckerberg transcript is done, adding commentary.

1Sam, I can’t agree more! Colleges are so eager to build their inquiry and applicant pools but then forget to ask the simple question that might help them focus their efforts better - “Are you still interested in our college?”
I also found it interesting that they mentioned graduate school in this letter. Nice touch on their part!
By the way, haven’t taken the chance to say congrats on your college selection. Wish you the best! And thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

2Hi Sam,
I am beginning what looks to be some extensive research on Yale College and all it has to offer. Part of its unique appeal is of course, Yale’s Residential College system (it’s just like Hogwarts!). But I was wondering what the different residential colleges were like and if there was a “best” residential college (so far Berkeley seems to be winning). Anyway, it would be cool if you wrote a post about what your top 3 Yale residential colleges would be, even though they’re assigned randomly. And you never know, a post like that could nudge the universe towards granting you one of your top choices in September

4If I had applied to other schools after I got into Yale, I’m pretty sure I would have left on UChicago. It’s really intensely cool and I hope that, at the least, I get to meet some people from there…! Or maybe, at this e-mail at Brian point out, Graduate school!

6No problem, Meredith. In fact I was just talking about the olden days of UChicago (70s) with an alumna mother of a good friend of mine, back when it was really more of the ‘where fun goes to die’ variety, but it still sounded like a good time. My mom was very anti-chicago prejudiced (as a geographical area, not the school) which made for an awkward time. Apparently Boston is actually windier?

Who is Sam Jackson?
Kind words about my blog:
Andrew Careaga calls it “a service to all of us in the higher ed marketing business.”
Christian Long says it has “dramatically inspired college admissions folks to take notice”
Bob Johnson says “I like [it] because I agree with so much of what he says.” and that “Paying attention what Sam writes will let you focus more closely on students who will actually attend your school.”
Karine Joly says my witty and fresh style “offers a rare glimpse at the mind of our elusive prospective students”
and TargetX calls my blog “good reading” and me “wise-beyond-my-years.”
