Last Saturday, I had a wonderful day in New York with some students from my residential college, our dean, master, and some Trumbull fellows. السبت الماضي ، كان لي يوما رائعا في نيويورك مع بعض الطلاب من كلية بلدي السكنيه ، لدينا دين ، الربان ، وبعض زملاء ترمبل. But that’s not the story that I wanted to write about today. It’sa beautiful day at the start of spring, and here’sa great chance to go to New York City: why pass up the opportunity, with such nicely subsidized resources? A speaker comes, some noted individual is brought for a master’s tea or club meeting, food is bought, a roomful of chairs carefully assembled, and then… no one–a mere handful, rather than the deluge organizers often expect. متحدث يأتي ، واشار البعض الاخر الى الفرد هو جلب لالماجستير الشاي او اجتماع النادي ، ويتم شراء الغذاء ، الغرفة الكاملة من الكراسي التي جمعت بعناية ، وبعد ذلك… لا أحد - مجرد حفنة ، بدلا من الطوفان المنظمون كثيرا ما نتوقع.

I’m not some angel of cultural engagement, mind you. انا لست من بعض الملاك الثقافيه الاشتباك ، واعتبارها لكم. Certainly not this semester. بالتأكيد ليس هذا الفصل الدراسي. My first semester, it was a problem of having too much to go to, so much to see and hear–I was really heavily engaged. بلدي الفصل الدراسي الاول ، وكانت مشكلة لها اكثر من اللازم للذهاب الى ، الكثير لأنظر واسمع - كنت منهمكه بشدة حقا. But this semester, I’ve replaced by 4 day weekend of music and public talks with a 7 day workweek. ولكن هذا الفصل الدراسي ، لقد قمت الاستعاضه عنها 4 ايام عطلة نهاية الاسبوع للموسيقى والجمهور محادثات مع 7 ايام اسبوع عمل. It’sa very sad existence, one whose depressing depths I will plumb another time. It'sa حزينة جدا وجود ، وأحد الذين ضغط اعماق سأقوم الشاقول وقت آخر. Suffice is to say, there isn’t much time to go anywhere fun or interesting. ويكفي أن أقول ، وليس هناك الكثير من الوقت لمتعة او الذهاب الى اى مكان للاهتمام.

I was thrilled to have that opportunity this weekend, and had a great time in New York. كنت قد thrilled الى ان الفرصة في عطلة نهاية هذا الاسبوع ، وكان عظيما في وقت نيويورك. But for every person trapped in a situation like mine–overloaded with either academics, or some extracurricular–there are just as many who never really seem to access what Yale has to offer up in terms of free and interesting activities. ولكن مقابل كل شخص حوصروا في حالة مثل الالغام مثقله اما الأكاديميين ، أو بعض اللامنهجيه - مثلما هناك الكثير الذي يبدو حقا ابدا الوصول الى ما ييل لتقدمه حتى من حيث الاهتمام والانشطه الحرة. Some turn a blind eye to at least a sizable portion of it. بعض تغض الطرف على الأقل جزء كبير منه.

It’s not all their fault: it can be overwhelming, and one might be inclined to just shut it all out. انها ليست جميع بسببهم : يمكن الساحق ، واحد قد تميل لمجرد انه اغلق جميع. It can be hard to find exactly what you might be interested in, too. ويمكن ان يكون من الصعب ايجاد بالضبط ما لكم قد تكون مهتمة ايضا. Hunting down flyers and reading for advertisements of new teas and events can be time-consuming. المطارده لقراءة النشرات والاعلانات الجديدة الشايات والاحداث يمكن ان تكون مستهلكة للوقت. The فأن Yale Bulletin & Calendar & ييل نشرة التقويم lists a lot of goings-ons, but misses a lot. قوائم الكثير من جار ons ، ولكن يخطئ كثيرا. There are few good centralized resources for events. هناك عدد قليل من حسن مركزي للموارد الاحداث. Facebook Events for Yale is a patchwork of parties and other happenings; useful, but certainly not comprehensive. The message I’m delivering may sound something along the lines of “Yale has so much money and other resources it just doesn’t know what to do with them, and drowns its students in activities!” Partially true. الرسالة أنا قد ايصال الصوت شيئا على غرار "ييل مدلولات الأموال والموارد الأخرى للتو انه لا يعرف ماذا يفعل معهم ، ويغرق طلابها في الانشطه!" صحيح جزئيا. But I’m not saying that Yale atomizes the social scene through its dispensations, or completely kills us with stressful exhortations to go to events. ولكن انا لا اقول ان ييل يفتت المشهد الاجتماعي من خلال dispensations ، أو يقتل لنا تماما مع المجهده الحث على الذهاب إلى الأحداث. It’s just that there is often a jarring gap between the potential… and the reality, where engagement and turnout is concerned. انها مجرد ان هناك في كثير من الاحيان التنافر الفجوه بين امكانات… واقع ، والاقبال على المشاركة فيها هي المعنية.

This is pretty true anywhere you put college students. هذا هو جميل الحقيقي في اي مكان وانتم تضعون طلاب الكليات. I just wanted to write something about it because a) it’s sad and b) when prospective students hear about a special draw for 4 tickets to an Opera or something like that, it might seem overly-perfect as a model of resource distribution. أردت فقط أن أكتب شيئا حيال ذلك بسبب أ) انها حزينة وب) عندما نسمع عن الطلاب المحتملين خاص لاستخلاص 4 تذاكر الى الأوبرا أو شيء من هذا القبيل ، وربما يبدو مفرطا - باعتباره نموذجا مثاليا للتوزيع الموارد. Arguably, more people ought to want to go to the Opera, too. يمكن القول ان اكثر الناس يجب تريد ان تذهب الى الأوبرا ، أيضا. I have to say, even though I’m musically inept in every possible way, the possibility of seeing Mozart’s masterpiece at the Met sent chills down my spine. أجد لزاما علي ان أقول ، على الرغم من اوجه القصور الفادح انا موسيقيا بكل وسيلة ممكنة ، وامكانيه رؤية موتسارت 'sتحفة وفي اجتمع ارسلت يبرد اسفل العمود الفقري بلادي. To reiterate: my ticket alone was two hundred and fifteen dollars. أكرر : بلادي التذاكر وحدها مائتان وخمسة عشر دولارا. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN DOLLARS. مائتان وخمسة عشر دولارا. Multiply that by five (four students and Master Haller), add in the cost of an expensive meal for five, then multiply that by twenty and you have how much JE spends on students each semester, only for Culture Draw. ان تتضاعف بحلول الخمسة (اربعة طلاب ماجستير وهالر) ، وتضاف في تكلفة باهظه التكلفه وجبة لمدة خمسة ، ثم ان تتضاعف بحلول العشرين ولديك هو مقدار ما ينفق على طلاب كل فصل ، الا لاستخلاص الثقافة. Can you begin to see why I love Yale so much? هل يمكن ان نرى لماذا تبدأ بحب ييل ذلك بكثير؟ It’s one thing to have scandalous amounts of money in your endowment, but it’s another thing to actually spend it on students. انه شيء واحد ليكون فضيحه مبالغ من المال في حسابك الهبات ، بل انها في الواقع شيء آخر لانها تنفق على الطلاب.

Jonathan Edwards college has an especially large amount of money available to it–it is independently endowed in a way which other colleges are not. جوناثان ادواردز كلية له وخصوصا كمية كبيرة من الاموال المتاحة له - وهو مستقل وهبت في طريقة الكليات الاخرى التي ليست كذلك. Thus, they have extra resources to spend on the Opera, or say, donating to the renovation of my (quite poor) residential college–which is still well taken care of, don’t worry! وبذلك تملك موارد اضافية للانفاق على الأوبرا ، أو القول ، تبرع لتجديد بلادي (الفقيره جدا) - كلية السكنيه التي لا تزال بخير ، العنايه ، لا تقلق!

Does Yale have a giant pile of money? هل ييل لها كومة ضخمة من المال؟ Yes! نعم! Does it spend it on students? انها لا تنفق على الطلاب؟ Thankfully, again, yes! Yet it sometimes seems the average student is less likely to see it spent on opera tickets (or interesting lecturers, etc) than they are to see it reappear through money given to clubs for funding which is then laundered by the clubs and transmuted into… well, not tickets to the Metropolitan Opera. شكرا ، مرة اخرى ، نعم! ولكن يبدو احيانا متوسط الطالب هو اقل احتمالا لرؤيتها تنفق على تذاكر اوبرا (أو ملفتة للاساتذة ، الخ) مما هى عليه لانها انظر الى الظهور من خلال اعطاء المال لتمويل النوادي التي هي ثم تغسل بها النوادي وتتحول… وايضا ، لا تذاكر الدخول الى اوبرا متروبوليتان. It seems likely that this situation is present at any school which provides similar cool resources–Yale might even be better about it, given certain niches within the student body. ويبدو من المرجح ان هذا هو الوضع الحالي في اي مدرسة الذي يوفر موارد مماثلة كوول - ييل ، بل قد يكون من الافضل في ذلك ، وبالنظر الى بعض المنافذ داخل الجسم الطالبي. Just wanted to deflate any bubbly images (or fears?) of complete cultural bliss for all, though–there are those who are disinterested. أردت فقط أن فرغ اي الشامبانيا صور (او مخاوف؟) من إتمام النعيم الثقافيه للجميع ، وان كان - هناك اولئك الذين هم غير المغرض. You just don’t see them when you’re out having a good time on Yale’s dime! انت فقط لا نرى لها عندما كنت أصل لها وقتا طيبا على ييل 'sالدايم! : ) :)
