It doesn't seem too bad in that regard in my L5 french class, but hearing about friends who had 5+ years of some language and then just would go into L3 or something because that's where the placement test put them after the summer, or whatever, was a little disheartening. Not to even begin talking about the people who are just underplacing themselves to "brush up on grammar" and totally screwing things up sometimes...

But yeah, I would (for workload considerations) gladly take on a few extra hundred pages of reading for some seminar than I would all the work required for so many of these language courses. It is of course just what it takes to learn a language properly, I understand that, but it doesn't mean I appreciate the distinction when both show up on my transcript for the same credit numbers. Not having quite realized this enough this term, I now see that taking 5 courses when one of them is a fairly intensive language course was kind of a bad call. It's only French that separates me from a 3 day workweek and general freedom, so even though I theoretically enjoy french, I really resent the workload.

I feel like languages at Yale are among the hardest requirements- if one can generalize that kind of thing. Perhaps this only applies to the introductory levels, especially in light of how many internationals are quadralingual and running. That said, they're all very put-together programs. My main complaint would be the rampant intellectual sluttiness that occurs with people placing far lower than they should and hyping the pace of lower level classes in spite of legit beginners who are struggling to keep up. Skinny/Tall Kid from Ancient Greek, I'm looking at you...
