What does the Yale College Council do?
Although the Yale College Council is not very much known for agitation or excitement, it has led to the development of some pretty good policies over the years, and in between my failed bids for elected student office I like to keep tabs on what its committees are working on. There was just released a fine, comprehensive report by the YCC detailing what they did in Fall 2008, what they want to do in 2009, etc.
Being YCC president is a very tough job of managing low expectations and harnessing the collective power of many type-A personalities to try to churn through Yale’s institutional bureaucracy and accomplish anything. That being said, the report isn’t all fluff — if you’re interested in seeing the breadth of issues people are thinking about, take a look at the attached report(s) – one complete, one summary. Also below, the introductory e-mail from YCC president Rich Tao.
FULL report [PDF] ; CONDENSED report [PDF]
Dear Yalies,
Attached to this e-mail are two documents detailing the work of the YCC from the past semester. The first document – “Fall ’08 (Full-Length).pdf” – is a comprehensive set of eight reports delineating the progress and outlook of the YCC and its affiliated bodies as we head into the spring ’09 semester. The second document – “Fall ’08 (Condensed).pdf” – is a succinct, 1-page summary of the first document’s contents.
Within the full-length document, you will find a budget report listing all the YCC’s expenditures from the past semester, and all our expected expenditures for spring ’09 (p. 21). Furthermore, you will also find a write-up detailing all Undergraduate Organizations Funding Committee allocations from the past semester (p. 33), as well as information regarding the work and progress of: (i) Yale Student Activities Committee (p. 25); (ii) Freshman Class Council (p. 27); (iii) Sophomore Class Council (p. 29); (iv) Junior Class Council (p. 32); and (v) The Ivy Council (p. 37).
We began the semester with the aim of holding both the administration and ourselves to high standards of transparency, accountability, and accessibility, and we believe these reports – the first of their nature in the YCC’s history – represent our sustained commitment to those principles. As always, if you ever have any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions, please get in touch with us at eboard@panlists.yale.edu.
Sincerely,
Richard Tao, YCC President
Emily Schofield, YCC Vice-President
Jasper Wang, YCC Secretary
Jon Wu, YCC Treasurer
Colin Leatherbury, YSAC Chair
Bryan Twarek, UOFC Chair
