That’s Why I Chose Yale – THE MUSICAL

I will keep this short and focus on the content here, folks, because it’s amazing. A few years back I wrote an angry letter to Yale Dean of Admissions Jeff Brenzel for not being forward-looking enough with the admissions office. I will soon have to draft him a letter of congratulations for his support of this great  student-led, student-created effort to create a fantastic Yale admissions music video. Much of what I’ve ever said on the blog about engaging branding and effective marketing comes together here in one fell swoop. More analysis of this later, and praise for the enterprising students who developed the video. For now, have a look and share your comments! You won’t regret it.

    Amazing! These guys are phenomenal.

Thanks for sharing this video. It’s pretty remarkable (and long at nearly 17 minutes).

It certainly doesn’t address the transparency you asked for in your “angry letter” a few years ago. But it does prove that the Admissions office trusts students enough to let them carry the institutional message.

Right, definitely. It has little to do with transparency and a lot of other things – but it does point to much better steps towards ‘real’ness versus say, 100% admissions directed photoshoots. Plus it’s creative, fun, and not stodgy. I think they did a great job. Even if it’s in a magical world where Yale’s weather is always perfect and no students are forced to take lectures for any reason, etc.

…and, adcoms bust a move at the drop of a hat.

    Now this is art!
It is so fantastically written, scored and performed.
It is funny, amusing, well done and extraordinary well performed. This is going to be cult!
I just love it. I already saw it and listened to it more than ten times. And I am going to see and hear it more times. The music is going to my MP3-player and my car.

    Be proud!!!

Maybe somebody don’t like it. But don’t care. It IS very high quality, and for those who understand to value it, it’s a pure gem.

Thank you so much to the entire team.

I think this goes a long way to show that while Yale is traditional ivy league institution (with all the beauty that entails), it’s also a college that is keeping up with the times. It is light-hearted and blatantly self-conscious and sends a message that Yale is place where people can not only learn, but have fun and be creative as well. It seems like the students and alumni who are behind the video view their college with a lot of affection, and that’s persuasive. Nice Job!
